Roof Rats

January and February is prime time for citrus tree growth and with that comes a more abundant roof rat problem. The most prevalent cause of roof rates is citrus fruit that has fallen from trees and not collected up immediately. Casa Serena recently paid the landscaper to remove the overgrowth and debris from the common area east of the pool so they will not have this area to fester and hide. We have also instructed the landscaper to keep the bottoms of the shrubs and bushes clear in our common areas and front yards.

Casa Serena Board member Sue Borrelli has become our local expert in dealing with roof rats. If you have any question or suggestions, contact Sue. The following is from the McCormick Ranch Property Owners Bulletin.

Roof rats in the MRPOA community cause problems and spread quickly. Every property owner needs to have information to make th eproper decisions regarding roof rats in the MRPOA community. Please follow these simple steps to help prevent the spread of roof rats:

  • Check your home for openings where roof rats might gain entry into your home.
  • Check exterior sheds for signs of rat entry.
  • Remove the debris from your property, including landscape debris, from underneath hedges, wood piles, and any other storage areas where rats might nest.
  • Trim trees away from your home, walls and fences.
  • Do not leave pet food outside and remove all ripe citrus.
